Tara Wildlife was established in 2012 and current directors Renier van Tonder and Eleonore Pretorius, welcomed their very first animal residents on the farm – a heard of blue wildebeest as well as the reserve’s foundation African lion cubs, Aru and Vitali.
Tara Wildlife is a private game reserve situated in the central Free State, approximately 300 kilometres from Johannesburg and 140 kilometres from Bloemfontein. Run by a sterling family in the grasslands of one of the country’s most agriculturally active provinces, Tara Wildlife guarantees an experience that everyone can enjoy!
From professional hunting experience of an exquisite variety of game to recreational activities horseback riding, game drives and more. We also provide accommodation in cozy thatch-roof chalets with the provision of delicious meals daily, all in the presence of grassland sunsets and roaring lions. Our concierge is with you every step of the way answering any questions you may have.

What to Expect at
Based in the Free State province in South Africa, Tara gives hunters the ideal chance to get up close with many of the beautiful animals of Africa. Renier and Eleonore are horse riding enthusiasts and welcome the chance to guide guests around their farm on horseback. Tara also is involved in a lion genetic exchange program and the lodge is surrounded by this sanctuary, giving the hunter a special treat every night listening to the sound of lion’s roar while sitting around the fire under the African night sky.
Over time, Tara acquired more popular game species that include kudu, oryx, sable antelopes, buffaloes, giraffes and many more. The number of African lions at Tara, exponentially increased to more than 70 during 2018. Tara offers you a selection of top-class facilities to enjoy in true African style.
The rehabilitation program, Helping Animals Recover from Trauma (HART) was taken over by Eleonore during 2015 and she planted its roots firmly in Tara Wildlife’s soil. HART dedicates itself to the recovery traumatized animals and then release them again in to natural habitats.
